Vic: Names of drowned relatives released
Eds: Corrects ages on updated police information
MELBOURNE, Dec 26 AAP - Victorian Police have released the names of four members of
the same family who drowned yesterday during a family Christmas trip to a national park
in the state's west.
They were 35-year-old Mahzar Dar, 55-year-old Muzaffar Mir and 12-year-old Marina Mir
all from Hillside, and 35-year-old Tahir Bhatti from Taylors Lakes.
The tragedy at McKenzies Falls in the Grampians National Park occurred after Marina
fell into a rock pool about 2.45pm (AEDT) yesterday.
Her father, Muzaffar Mir, two uncles and 17-year-old sister all dived into the water
to rescue the girl.
Only the sister survived.
She was resuscitated and taken to nearby Stawell Hospital for treatment.
A nurse at the hospital said the teenager was "obviously very upset but she is in a
very satisfactory condition".
The bodies of Mr Mir and one of the uncles were recovered quickly, but they were unable
to be revived.
The other two bodies were discovered by police divers shortly after 9pm (AEDT) yesterday.
All the deceased were part of group of about 30 relatives on a trip to Stawell and
the Grampians region.
