BAIDOA, Somalia U.S. and French troops rumbled into this hungry,lawless city at sunrise today to open the next phase of the West'shuge armed humanitarian mission.
The convoy of 670 U.S. Marines and French Foreign Legionnaires,which left Mogadishu early Tuesday for the 120-mile journey, carriedno relief aid but packed firepower to confront feuding clan fighters.
The troops seek to set up a base to allow the flow of food andsupplies into the city, which has come to symbolize the horrors ofSomalia's famine and civil war.
